Historical Developments. HumanSource was first stood up in 1998 as one of the first Canadian organizations in competitive intelligence (CI) and business intelligence (BI) consulting and training. Between 1998 and 2005, we have been involved in projects in Canada, USA and Europe, with commercial, NGO and government clients. Our first CI/BI projects pioneered the Canadian landscape, for example:
- Advanced interviewing and elicitation techniques training
- Applied behavioral analysis techniques to competitive intelligence
- Remote profiling techniques
- Standing-up a competitive intelligence cell
- Training in developing competitive and customer intelligence programs
HumanSource’s Principal. After working for a international consulting firm and lecturing in psychology and leadership at university, HumanSource’s principal, Bruno Vanasse, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Canadian Army Reserve Intelligence, following the 9/11 attacks, pioneered the development of Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) from 2002 to 2009, a new capability for the Canadian Forces specially developed for operations in Afghanistan, where his social science and intelligence expertise has been put to contribution. Basically PSYOPS can be seen as as a combination of “military marketing”, broadcasting, Strategic Communications, PR and sales, in foreign cultures with the ultimate objective to influence behaviour, using non-lethal means often to prevent the use of force. Here is a more formal definition:
PSYOPS are military actions designed to influence the behaviour of individuals, groups, and foreign governments (friendly, neutral, adversary), using all modes of communications (Web, TV, radio, SMS, billboards, face-to-face, leaflets, loudspeakers, etc) adapted to the language and culture, to achieve military and political objectives on operations
Because of this effort, his presence with HumanSource has been limited since 2005 as he took up active duty with the Canadian military, when the PSYOPS project grew exponentially as Canada deployed its forces to Kandahar. He has been providing strategic advice internationally at the highest levels of government and the military. As he recently moved to Western Canada and transitioning to full-time civilian work, he is now back actively engaged with the firm and ready to share his expertise and his extensive international experience.
